Malaysian University Still Got Quota???

I thought beginning from a few years ago, our public university admission is based on meritocracy system (meaning if you are good academically, you get a place) and the quota system based on race was abolished?! But reading this news report, it seems like we can ask for a specific allocation in university?! Does that mean that the quota system still exist??? This is an interesting question, isn't it!!! Is the university intake using meritocracy or quota system? But frankly, I do notice that the intake of Indian student is rather low. I only have one Indian friend in my entire department....

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu says the MIC is monitoring the size of the intake of Indians in universities.

"(Towards that end), I urge Indian students to send a copy of their university applications to the MIC headquarters," the party president said in a statement yesterday.

"In view of the high achievements of Indian students, we have asked the government to increase the intake to eight per cent this year."

Samy Vellu said he made the request to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Khalid Nordin and said Khalid had told him that he would consider the party's appeal.

In the statement, Samy Vellu called on the government to offer Indians courses in critical fields such as medicine, law, dentistry and engineering instead of "just any course".

The intake of Indian students was 6.11 per cent in 2006, 5.6 per cent in 2005, 5.9 per cent in 2004, 5.2 per cent in 2003 and 2.7 per cent in 2002.
