KUALA LUMPUR: Seven Malaysian students were awarded scholarships totalling RM2.3 million by the Korean government for their undergraduate studies in Korea yesterday.

The seven were among 5,000 applicants who attained the best scores in the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia examination.

The RM65,000 annual scholarship for each person comprises round-trip airfares, monthly allowances, medical insurance and full tuition fees for a year's study of the Korean language and the degree course.

One of the recipients, Irene See, 20, who will pursue a career in chemical engineering, was thrilled with the opportunity.

"I am 50 per cent excited and 50 per cent nervous because I will have to learn a different language and culture."

The recipients will have to undergo a Korean language course for a year at any 20 Korean university of their choice before applying for the courses they desire.

Korean ambassador Yang Bong Ryull said the scholarships offered by the Korean government were to strengthen ties between both countries.

"We value the strong relationship between both countries and this effort is to integrate both cultures for a better understanding."

He said the Korean government was also offering scholarships for graduate studies in master's degree and doctorate degree programmes in Korea.

Thirty Malaysians will be selected for this.
