Japanese Government Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarships

This scholarship is applicable to both undergraduate and postgraduate (research) students for a variety of courses.

REQUIREMENTS - Undergraduate
- Below 22 years of age
- Completed secondary school and are eligible for entering a university in their country
- Field of Study:
(i)Social Science and Humanities:
A:Law, Politics, Pedagogy, Sociology, Literature, History, Japanese Language and others
B:Economics,Business Administration

(ii) Natural Sciences:
A:Science (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry), Electric & Electronic Studies (Electronics, Electrical Eng., Information Eng.) , Mechanical Studies (Mechanical Eng., Naval Architecture, Agricultural Eng.) , Civil Eng., and Architecture (Civil Eng., Architecture, Environmental Eng.), Chemical Studies (Applied Chemistry, Chemical Eng., Industrial Chemistry, Textile Eng.), Other fields (Metallurgical Eng., Mining Eng., Maritime Engineering, Biotechnology)
B:Agricultural Studies (Agriculture, Agricultural Chemistry, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Forestry, Food Science, Fisheries) Hygienic Studies (Pharmacy, Hygienics, Nursing), Science (Biology)
C:Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary

BENEFITS - Undergraduate
- Monthly allowance: Y134,000
- Transportation: One round-trip ticket
- Tuition: Remission of examination, entrance and tuition fee
- Arrival allowance: Y25,OOO
- Medical fee reimbursement
- Duration tenable: 5 years (7 years: Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Pharmaceutial Sciences of 6 year system)

REQUIREMENTS - Postgraduate (Research)
- Below 35 years of age
- A university or college graduates (or prospect)
- Ideally 1st or 2nd Class Upper Honours Degree
- Field of Study:
i)Social science and Humaniteies: Literature, History, Aesthetics, Law, Politics, Economics, Commerce, Pedagogy, Psychology, Sociology, Music, Fine Arts, etc.

ii)Natural Sciences: Pure Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Fisheries, Pharmacology, Medicine, Dentistry, Home Economics

BENEFITS - Postgraduate (Research)
- Monthly allowance: Y172,000
- Transportation: One round-trip ticket
- Tuition: Remission of examination, entrance and tuition fee
- Arrival allowance: Y25,OOO
- Medical fee reimbursement
- Duration tenable: 2 years

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
- Done via the Japanese Embassy
- Obtain application forms from the embassy
- Initial screening involves document inspection, a written test and an interview
- Subjects of the written test
a) Research students: Japanese, English (Option)
b) Undergraduate students: Japanese, English, Mathematics, World History or Science (two subjects from chemistry, physics and biology)
- The local Japanese embassies conduct their screening on the basis of these test results, and then make their recommendations to MEXT.
- MEXT confers with the selection committee, deliberates with the host schools, and then makes it final selections.
- While candidates may express their preferences for specific shools of study, the final decision will be made by MEXT.
- For further details, candidates should contact the Japanese embassy in their own specific country or region.
- Application is normally done in March of the year preceding the year when the course commences
